Top 5 Most Alien Landscapes - On Earth
Over the years of running TravBuddy, we've come across numerous photos that are so stunning, yet alien looking, that it's hard to believe that they were taken on this planet! From ghostly icebergs to vibrant plains, this list aims to show that you don't need to be a millionaire flying on Virgin Galactic to explore otherworldly realms.
5. Antarctic Sound

Antarctica conjures up colorless images of vast white icebergs, but there is a surprising amount of color in this least visited of landscapes. The icebergs form truly remarkable shapes, standing out among a dark, windswept sea, conjuring up images of a watery, alien planet. The seemingly boneless lifeforms here also remind one of cuter versions of Jabba the Hut:

4. Salar Uyuni, Boliva
Salar Uyuni, Bolivia - the largest salt plain in the world, at over 4,000 square miles. The flat white expanse of land is so alien looking that the human eye finds it difficult to process the perspective correctly, leading to some pretty entertaining photos:

3. Machu Picchu, Peru
Constructed over 500 years ago by the Incans, the remote location, stunning geography, and ancient buildings of Machu Picchu evoke the ruins of an alien civilization. Many people who are lucky enough to get here before the crowds describe their experience as truly spiritual and out of this world.

2. Grand Canyon, USA
It's hard to comprehend the scale of the Grand Canyon unless you've seen it for yourself, and pictures don't do it justice. At places the canyon is over a mile deep, and until you've peered 5,000 feet down into the vast abyss, it's hard to believe such monumental formations exist on this planet.

1. Marble Bar, Australia
When this photo was first posted, I was struck by the vibrant contrast of colors in such a seemingly dead, scorched landscape. Indeed, Marble Bar is known as the "hottest town" in Western Australia, and, some argue, the world. In 1924 there was a stretch of 161 days in which the temperature never dropped below 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The fact that there is very little written about this place in TravBuddy is testament to its inhospitable, foreign landscape.
