Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is the easternmost nation on the Indochinese Peninsula. The S-shaped country borders China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest and the South China Sea to the east.

Vietnam is divided into three regions: the northern (bắc), central (trung) and the southern (nam) regions.

The northern region has Hanoi (the capital), Hai Phong, Hai Duong and Sa Pa, located on the Red River Delta. One can visit the Hill tribes, Ha Long Bay ("Bay of the Descending Dragons") and the Perfume Pagoda (Chùa Hương). The Central region consists of Da Nang, Hue (ancient imperial capital) and Hoi An (preserved architecture from the 15th to 19th centuries). One can visit the Marble Mountain, China Beach, Cham ruins near My Son and various ancient temples. The southern region has Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), Nha Trang (known for its beaches), Da Lat and Can Tho. This is where one can visit the Mekong Delta, the French inspired buildings in central HCMC, the Cu Chi tunnels and the beaches in Vung Tau.

With a population of approximately 84.5 million, Vietnam is the 13th most populous country in the world and the world's second largest producer of coffee. The number of tourists to Vietnam has increased steadily over the past ten years, with nearly 3.56 million visitors in 2006. With the increase of tourists, hotel staff, guides and shopkeepers speak a fair amount of English, Japanese and French.

Like Phnom Penh, one night in Ho Chi Minh City was enough for me. The 11:15 bus lurched and swayed out of city traffic then the driver sped northward, blasting the horn like a madman. The two-lane blacktop highway was congested by Chinese copies of small Honda motorbikes, priced affordable to the less fortunate people of the countryside. Stretches of open highway were few and far between since  houses, shops, villages, and even small towns and cities have appeared along it...

I met that 11 year old girl in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City. It was my last day. She sold postcards while I was sitting at a Cafe. I asked her to come over and join me. She was an awesome girl. Smart, cute, cheeky, good hearted and so strong-minded.I saw so much in her... I wanted to stay in contact. She couldn't write and I knew she felt ashamed about it. I hired her to show me a few places. I bought her new shoes, since hers were wrecked. She looked kinda dirty and poor and there were lot...

It was yet again another early start for me today as I waited for a bus to take me for a tour of the Mekong Delta, south of Ho Chi Minh City. I was looking forward to a leisurely boat ride down the river as opposed to the madness of the city. The bus took a while to reach the Delta but nowadays I'm pretty used to long bus/train journeys so 8 hours just isn't a problem anymore. Its strange to think that I used to think London to Manchester was a long journey (3-3 and a half hours). It just rea...
