Varanasi (Benares) is a holy city situated along the Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh. It is a place where life meets death and Hindu devotees come from all over to offer puja to the Great Mother Ganga. It is a hectic and busy city beyond the old part of Varanasi, but along the Ganges it is peaceful and serene(besides the occasional person trying to scam you). The old part of Varanasi is composed of narrow streets widning around the way to the ghats. It is very easy to get lost here but there are signs all over the help you find your way. Varanasi is also home to Benares Hindu University where you will find a mix of students from all over the world.

Here we met new friends who became good friend during the trip becasue wherever we went to, always met them by co-incident even we left India, we still met up! What a soul mate we were???! Haha ...

The waterfront hustled with hundreds of wooden boats propelled by oars; hauling freight, fishermen, passengers, and precious wood from distant villages for the funeral pyres. Raju led us through a narrow and winding, brick-paved alley which was scattered with cow dung, to the Holy Hotel. Chris and I checked into a damp and darkened upstairs room for 20 Rupees and left our back-packs. Wooden windows, latched shut, deterred rampant monkeys and other thieves.

So we had a somewhat ok night sleep and woke early because it was so hot. I asked someone how far we had to go to get there, and he said we're arriving about 6pm....Great! That makes it a 23 hr train trip. We started with 4 litres of water and were down to 2. 2 litres of water for another 10 hours or so in a boiling hot train while you are sticking to the vinyl. We also had no food, but water was our main concern.
Another nap and we woke to a group of school boys taking li...

Leaving India
I awake to my last day in India, maybe forever and ever; it makes me feel sad that I may never be back in this astounding country of such contrasts, but I have enjoyed some great times and have memories that will live with me for life, I have met wonderful people that I would never have come into contact with normally, and for the first time in my life I have been left to my own recourses with no Husband or family to fall back on, I have found my own way and gro...
