KL calling

After obtaining some form of a tan on Langkawi I consulted the guide book to figure out some kind of vague plan. As most of the people I've met along the way so far already know I'm not a big fan of planning anything. At this point I was becoming a little travel weary, I didn't want to be spending 2 days here and 2 days there looking at little towns that, to me just didn't sound interesting.

As you travel you start to understand that you really don't have to go and see every sight possible in a place. For me I'm not particularly interested in seeing my hundred cave or waterfall but for others they must see it to tick another box. I've found that I've been much more selective about what I want to see due to what I'm interested in. I really wouldn't want to see every attraction in a place, my budget would have trouble keeping up. In many countries in the smaller towns and villages you often get the impression that they were desperate for some sort of tourist attraction to bring the money in. It probably went along these lines..."hmm how can we make money from these travellers passing through our characterless one horse town?", "how about the hugely disappointing waterfall on the hill?", "Excellent idea, we can charge them to take a tuk tuk 5 miles to the 'beautiful waterfall' and we'll have lots more people staying here if we can find anything else to call an attraction.".

Hopefully somehow you can understand why I'm starting to become much more selective about the sights I make the effort to see. After Langkawi I looked into visiting Penang, but after reading about the place it didn't seem all that interesting. This was later confirmed when I spoke to two other sets of people who said it was "ok". Eventually I decided to catch the night bus back to Kuala Lumpur in order to catch up on some sleep and to sort out my laundry.

I checked into Pudu Hostel opposite the bus station in China Town, Kuala Lumpur. I'd been here before, it's pretty comfortable for a hostel in a city. As I was hanging around in the hostel I bumped into Roy who I had met on Koh Tao in Thailand. He was in Kuala Lumpur with two Irish girls that he knew from back home.

After taking a few days to chill out watching football and James Bond films I boarded the five and a half hour bus to Singapore.
