Hong Kong Island
In my cramped four bed dorm on the 14th floor of a scruffy block of flats in Kowloon I met my Korean roommate, Yumi. She was in Hong Kong for a while to sort out her Chinese visa or "vija" as she would amusingly pronounce it. She was travelling around China with two friends she had met when studying in Northern China.
As we were both intending on visiting Victoria Peak (the highest point on Hong Kong Island with great views of the city) we decided to go together, firstly visiting Stanley, a small town on the south coast of Hong Kong island. We wandered around the market in Stanley which seemed much better than the night market I went to earlier on Temple Street, Kowloon. As usual I bought nothing, Yumi was on the hunt for a bag but proved just as bad as me at shopping.
Although sometimes we found It a little difficult to understand each other as her English wasn't perfect we seemed to get on well and shared a similar sense of humour. Only I had to tell my fantastic jokes ten times slower whilst attempting to drop my northern English accent.
After a coffee we headed back to Central, Hong Kong island on the bus to find the Peak Tram to take us up Victoria Peak. The tram cost 30HKD and was quite fun....for a tram. Once at the top of the views of Hong Kong were great although there was some cloud around. We took the tram back down to Central and ate Dim Sum for dinner in a very nice but not too expensive restaurant. We then caught the Star Ferry back to Kowloon and our hostel with a loudly snoring Chinese man in one of the bunks above... I reached for my ear plugs.
