Back to the beach
After the jungle trek I headed to the north west corner of Malaysia near the Thai border to an island called Langkawi. I was going to go to the east coast but the monsoon weather meant it wasn't a great idea.
I caught an over night bus from Kualar Lumpur, the bus turned out to be the best bus I've been on so far on my trip. Three seats took up one row, each seat having a leg rest, foot rest and more than ample room. Despite this after getting of a short ferry journey from the mainland I was still tired but opted for sitting on the beach all day.
I stayed in a guest house called "shirin" with a great friendly (and slightly crazy) Iranian guy and his wife who owned the place. The Husband, in his late 60's would challenge everyone to a game of chess, poker etc every evening. He also loved discussing world politics, this along with the chess playing (and slight cheating!) reminded myself of my own grandfather. I managed to avoid playing him and no doubt getting beat but played a few card games with the resident Japanese man who couldn't speak much English and a couple from Sweden I'd met earlier.
The main beach on Langkawi was pretty nice with no people trying to sell you anything, the only issue was jet ski's and speed boats making a hell of a noise. For some reason the locals also think it's a good idea to drive 4X4 down the beach as well as motor bikes, no doubt on there way to the jet ski's, banana boat and speed boats.
Apart from that the beach was a nice place to relax and I made full use of it for about three days without doing much else really. Having really not done much for a week I have no interesting stories from Langkawi, hence the lack of blog entries recently.
