From desert to Canyon

From CA we drove across the northern section of Death Valley to Vegas. Not my favorite part of the trip. One, I'm not old enough to gamble. Two, I don't agree with how it is legal to hand out porn on every corner of the city, and three, I think I'm going to die of smoke inhalation just from being there one night. The only good part was the mall in this Planet Hollywood place. It was awesome because I've never seen anything like it - when you looked up it seemed like you were outside, but it was in the mall the whole time. After Vegas we drove back south to AZ. Saw the Hoover Dam as we drove past it....actually over it. Final destination: Grand Canyon for a grand finale. We have debated this part of the trip this whole week because we have been driving in the heat, but decided on just going for it to see how far we get. Already had reservations since February for Bright Angel Campground at the bottom. So we got started around 7 am - way later then we wanted. It was amazing, but hard work. It took us 6 hours to get to the campground with lots of breaks. Spent the rest of the afternoon in the creek which we camped right next to. Since we were all feeling the heat, we derived a brilliant plan. Hahaha. We decided to go to bed at 6pm and wake up at 2am to get a jump on the heat. We were on the trail at 2:20am... me in leading the way with my little headlamp across the bridge over the Colorado, up the switchbacks, everyone else following with one flashlight between them. It was quite the experience. Didn't meet anybody until about 6am. Got to the top in 5.5 hours, which surprised us since our downward time was 6hrs. Well anyways, back to Phoenix for one more day, mostly relaxing. And another delayed flight home.
