A visit to Yogya when Merapi was about to erupt...
I have been planning for my trip to Yogyakarta months prior to my visit there. All has been prepared, hotel, transportation, itinerary and all. Then this pesky volcano in Yogya made a threat of violent eruption. This same volcano has a history of violent eruption, Burubodor was once covered with volcanic debris from this volcano.
After weighing things and asking locals if it's safe to go there, I decided to push through with the trip. So there, despite of the heightened warnings, I made my way to see the Artist's city of Yogya. I stayed there for three days, exploring the wonderful Burubodor Temple, visiting Batik shops, went to the Sultan's palace, explored Taman Sari, enjoyed a buffet with Ramayana Ballet show and lastly, enjoyed Prambanan Temple.
It is a dream come true for me to see Burubodor Temple.
The day I left Yogyakarta was the same day Merapi has erupted. I had my stop in Jakarta before going back to Singapore, and in Jakarta, I watched CNN with the eruption of Merapi as one of the headlines.
And in less than a month of my visit, there was this deadly earthquake in Yogyakarta. Hundreds perished....
