Winter dawn along Rhine river

Today, sunday, was another very cold morning. I woke up early and saw that the sky started to color red. It took some effort but got myself out of bed for another short photo trip. When I left, the temperature was minus 11 degrees Celsius, but when I drove further upstream, it dropped to a lowest of minus 13.
Today, the sun had much more difficulty to break through the clouds, which were not very thick though. It made a totally different atmosphere than yesterday when the sun was bright, and admittedly I was much later yesterday also.
The play between the sun, the clouds, the snow and the river, delivered a lot of different colors, from red, to gold, to silver. There was not much wind which meant that there were some nice reflections on the water of the river.
I drove up from Schoonhoven to Culemborg, and just followed the high river dike of the Rhine. It is a beautiful route because around every bent it is a different scenery.
There were a lot of birds, such as wild swans, geese, coots, ducks and other water fowl, that were seeking shelter in the water on the west sides of the breakwaters in the river. Due to the frozen swampy waters in the reed lands, it was to dangerous to get on the ice along the river bank to try to get closer to the birds. Still, some of them can be seen in the pictures.
