About 8am, the KTM train stopped at Padang Besar train station for 1 hour for us to go through customs. There is a Money Exchange Shop here that offers pretty good value. Then we reboarded the train to get to Hat Yai. I was freaking sleepy and blur cuz i didn't get any sleep the night before. There was this agent who came on the train and asked us if we wanted to take his private van to go straight to our hotel(return trip), but his price was very steep! rm 120 compared to a bus ride that costs rm21(one way)! However we have to find our way to the Hat Yai bus station and the bus only drops us at th bus station in Krabi and we have to find our way to the hotel in Ao Nang Beach.
We reached Hat Yai after about 1 hour. There were many touts and agents at the train station so it was pretty scary trying to reject them! We planned to take a tuk tuk that costs rm2 per person to the bus station but then the persistant agent followed us and reduced his price to rm90 per person. In my blur state of mind, i thought the bus ticket was rm42 one way and thought that is deal was pretty good so he took us to his travel agency. Only after booking did i realize my HUGEEEE mistake of PAYING TOOOOO MUCH!!!! FUCK!! but it was too late! the ticket was non-refundnable!!FML!!!
We walked around Hat Yai and had lunch at some local coffeeshop. I was surprised that some Thais actually speak fluent Hokkein! We continued to wonder around the city as we didn't know what attractions there were in Hat Yai(no internet either).
There were 3 of us so we decided to cut costs and say that there are only 2 of us otherwise we have to pay extra rm70 per night for 1 extra bed!! The hotel staff believed us and we shared 2 single bed between 3 people. I bought the hotel rooms through a Groupon voucher so it was a good deal, though we still had to pay rm100 per night because it was high season. The room was better than expected and the surroundings of the hotel was actually very nice! It was designed in a way that it feels like you're living in the forest....which is a bad thing when that brings a lot of mosquitoes into your room!
After unpacking and bathing, we took a tuk tuk to McDonalds. I googled that there were some food carts that sold cheap food beyond McDonalds and it was true! The food was REALLY good and yummy! We had papaya salad(rm5), banana pancake(rm2), bbq chicken leg(rm5) and many more! The food here was really much cheaper than restaurant food. We walked along the shops at Ao Nang Beach which turned out to be a VERYYYY long beach! We looked through the prices of the MANY tour agancies and compared them. Finally we booked the famous PhiPhi island snorkelling tour(full day) for rm100 per person and the Bor Thor kayaking tour(half day, without lunch) for rm60 per person. We only managed to cover 1/4 of the strip before taking a tuktuk back to our hotel and sleep!
