Our first stop at an outside bar to have our very first TIGER beer!

We arrived into Singapore from London excited about our first trip into Asia and Australia! It was going to be a short stay in Singapore as this stop was originally just to break up the long flight from England to Australia. But oh we are so glad we took some time to look around this beautiful city! We arrived into Singapore's Changi airport early Wednesday morning and found ourselves in what was one of the most beautiful airports that we have been to. As we made our way through the airport and the amazing botanical gardens that they had inside, we later found out that they also had a butterfly garden, a rooftop pool, a three-story indoor slide and 500 complimentary Internet kiosks among many other amenities! After getting through customs we grabbed a taxi and were off to our hotel passing through more beautiful gardens, flowers, and palms.

..and we were still on the airport grounds. As some cities dont have the best first impressions and take a little while to get used to....Singapore was the total opposite. It passed my first impression test with flying colors before we even left the airport. We then knew that this was going to be a great city! The weather was very humid and warm as Singapore is near the equater, but we loved it as we had been having a very cold and rainy winter in England...ahh the warmth! We arrived at our hotel The Concord and got ready to hit the streets to start exploring.

We started out walking down the beautiful, clean, tree lined streets and did not get very far before we passed a posh hotel with a very nice outside bar area. Now, one of my hobbies as I travel through different countries around the world is not only try the local cuisine, but I HAVE to try the local beer.

Boat Quay
So I asked for the local beer which was Tiger Beer. At the time I had never heard of Tiger and had my first taste...So good, refreshing, a light lager but had such a great taste and still stronger than the American lighter lagers. Its funny, because now days Tiger is sold at our local grocery stores here in Dallas. After one or two were off again heading toward Chinatown.

We walked around Chinatown which actually had alot of Victorian architecture, but didn't stay too long, as we wanted to see Boat Quay. This is a historical quay in Singapore which is situated upstream from the mouth of the Singapore River on its southern bank.

Very picturesque quay lined with bars, restaraunts, and shops right on the river with the backdrop of the Singapore skyline. And at night the lights from the skyline and the restaraunts shimmered off the river. Singapore seemed to me like a modern, new, clean city with very small hints of old world victorian architecture sparsely spread throughout the city...just an interesting mix as well as very culturally diverse. We took a river cruise which I recommend doing in any city with those capabilities. It is in my opinion one of the best ways to tour and get to know a city and its infrastructure, history, etc.

After the cruise we had a few more "Tigers" before setting out to find the largest fountain in the World..."The Fountain of Wealth" It  is listed by the Guinness Book of Records in 1998 as the largest fountain in the world. It is located in one of Singapore's largest shopping malls, Suntec City. I had known about this fountain through one of my Travel Channel shows and knew that they put on an amazing laser light show with the fountain...and it was a very cool experience! After the laser show we headed back to Boat Quay and had a delicious Sushi Dinner. What a day...what a city! More to see tomorrow...
