The small island of Tiengemeten is located in the province of Zuid-Holland (South-Holland), at less than 45 minutes by car from Rotterdam, in the so-called Delta Area. This area is where three major rivers, Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt find their the ends of their route through Western Europe and flow into the North Sea.

The island is quite small: 8.5 by 3 kilometers (5.5 by 2 miles). Until the early 90's of last century, there was a small inhebited village and scattered over the island some farms. Agriculture was the main income source. After various plans to turn it into a vacation hotspot, a waste deposit and other crazy ideas, a nature conservation society stepped in and the island was designated as protected nature area.

Even many Dutch don't know about this island (between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors annually), so until now it is a somewhat hidden treasure.

It is open to the public between 10 a.m.

and 5 p.m., that is, between the first and the last ferry departure. Motorized vehicles are not allowed. There are some museums (an agriculture museum and a museum dedicated to a Dutch nature illustrator), a visitors center, an inn with a restaurant and some hotel rooms, and a few remote houses where visitors can stay overnight. Transportation of goods take place with one of the few golf carts on the island. Visitors can bring their own bicycles, or rent one at the ferry landing.

Food and bevarage is available at the inn of course but also at the visitor's center.

The island is quite open: grasslands, scattered trees and bushes, creeks and ponds. Many different birds that are endemic to the brackish Delta area van be spotted here. In some parts of the island, semi-wild cows roam around.

A visit may make for some good photo's too, especially if it is half clouded half blue sky.

Wil ik ook zeker nog doen ... vorig jaar ben ik samen met TB Sweettangerine naar Strijen en Maasdam geweest, zeer prachtig om te wandelen en te fietsen!
