Siena is one of the most wonderful & charming city in Italy. Come here to taste wonderful wine and magical Tuscan's cooking.
You will not believe your eyes, visiting incredible churches, walking up and down in these insanely beautiful streets, all merging to the amazing Piazza del Campo. The shell-shaped piazza is famous for the Palio's horse race which is taking place twice a year in the summer there!
If you are a good observer, you will have noticed every street has a badge under it's name! Most of the time with an animal on it. Well it's because Siena is divived in 17 contrades. A contrade is more or like a district area and each one has its own name, badge and animal representing it! And if you followed the logic, every contrade is represented by a horse in the Palio, that's why the race is so important & passionate for the people of Siena! People are pretty fierce about it and if some contrade gets along with the others ones pretty well, some are at wars between each other and the revenge after the Palio are sometimes quite nasty!
Here are the names of the 17 contrades:
Aquila (Eagle), Bruco (Caterpillar), Chiocciola (Snail), Civetta (Little Owl), Drago (Dragon), Giraffa (Giraffe), Istrice (Crested Porcupine), Leocorno (Unicorn), Lupa (Female Wolf), Nicchio (Seashell), Oca (Goose), Onda (Wave), Pantera (Panther), Selva (Forest), Tartuca (Tortoise), Torre (Tower), Valdimontone (Valley of the Ram).
I bought a wonderful frame with the 17 contrades when i was there, it was hard to fit it in my luggage.
Don't miss this city on your trip to Tuscany or you will regret it! Come to see the sunset on this beautiful place.
