the Angevine-Aragonese castle overlooking the Ionian sea

I stopped in Gallipoli(in Greek lovely city) because... I have heard that name at school many years ago:in fact I confused the Apulian city with the Gallipoli peninsula in northwestern Turkey, site of a famous battle during the WWI,but I have no regrets!

Gallipoli is a fishing village located by the Ionan sea that was important in Greek and Roman times. In the past its commercial port was a main facility for the olive oil trade sold abroad all the European countries  and used in oil lamps. Its lovely old town is linked to the new town by a 16th century arched stone bridge and dominated by a massive Angevine-Aragonese castle(no visit) overlooking the sea.

Gallipoli Baroque cathedral

The old town houses plenty of churches and Baroque architecture:the richly decorated façade of the Baroque Sant' Agatha cathedral is impressive as the close  old pharmacy with nice ceramic jars and vaulted ceiling...Few meters of them stands the 17th church of Santa Maria della Purita with a beautiful stucco interior and nearby La Puritate,a Michelin rated restaurant where we had a nice seafood lunch.
