a scenic train ride

The lonely planet describes the train trip to paraganua as a must see in Brazil, so we decided to add it to our itinerary.

Getting the train to paraganua required a overnight stop in the ¨eco¨city of brazil (Curitiba). However all we saw was a scungy HI hostel so we weren to impressed. The train trip had a great rap which included 67 bridges and via ducts and 13 tunnels (through granite), obviously the engineers amongst us were excited.

The trip was great, traveling through jungle with amazing views of canyons and waterfalls and some pretty impressive bridges, best to have a look at the photos.

Remember this rail road was built in 1885 to improve access to the port at Paranagua and as our guid insisted, all the structures are original). It would have been quite an effort to build these tracks on the side of the mountain especially in those days!

After the trip we got off the train and pulled out our map of paranagua, as usual saying ´no thankyou´to all those who tried to offer us accommodion. It turns out they were probably trying to tell us that we were not actually in Paranagua but a town 1hr from there, inland. If we had better Portugese we would have found out earlier that the train only goes all the way on a Saturday.  Anyway we eventually arrived at Parangua in the early afternoon. This is the jumping off point for Ilha do Mel which is supposed to be lovely, but we let it slide for other islands further north, and we had to keep moving up to Parati.. for the Aistralia vs Croatia game! So we spent the night and headed off in the morning

trvlquestions says:
Does anyone know if you can take the bus from Morretes or Paranagua to Florianopolis and how long it takes?

thanks
