Nazca Lines
We arrived in Nazca via the ´chicken bus´ (in contrast to the express bus) from Ica. The bus stopped about 20 million times along the way and let off let on people. However the most serious time was when the police stopped us, Andrew and i sat silently as the police inspected a lots of peoples identification. Thankfully after about 5mins we were on our way with no problems. I guess they must have been looking for someone.
We were in Nazca pretty much just to visit the lines, which are famous around the world. They are lines supposably built by the nazcans by shifting the darker rocks on the surface to expose the lighter underneath soil. The weird thing is though that you can only see the patterns from the air. There are many theories on the reasons for these lines but we both like the theory that they were trying to communicate with their gods, particuarly during times of immense drought.
The coolest thing about them was how they were so straight and two lines are perfectly paralell as they travel up and over mountains. We expected the whole experience to be a bit of a night mare trying to get a decent deal for the flight and not get completely scammed in the process. However we met a couple of south african guys (SAFA´s) when we first got to town who had 1) already done a great deal on the hotel and ii) had already worked out the best price for the lines and been up there that afternoon. So we organised ourselves for the lines and checked in and just expected the hard stuff to happen at the airport. But it didn´t and everyhting ran completely smoothly, they picked us up when we expeceted, we saw a video, went up in a small plane, the pilot was great he circled the lines a couple of times ( i was feeling pretty sick from this) to make sure we all got the best shot we could and then we got taken back to our hotel.
A two hour round trip. Those saffa´s ended up giving us another great tip that we could hang out at the local 5 star hotel pool for the afternoon while waiting for our bus to Arequipa. and for only $5 we get a sandwich and a drink thrown in. We really couldn´t complain. Except I got myself a bit burnt (it was the first laying in the sun time since we started the ´holiday´).All in all Nazca treated us pretty well. Onto Arequipa now.
