San Christobal & Bella Vista
May 25, 2006
This was the day to walk up the San Christobal hill, where the big status is. There is a cable car up one side and a funicular railway on the other, but we figured it would be nice to get some fresh pollution in the lungs and warm up the legs again.
It is actually a pleasant walk up. The hill itself is about 300m high so it does provide some impressive views of the city and mountains (if you can see through the smog).
For the way down, we could not find the path down so we took the funicular railway, which looks quite old and creaky but worked fine. This takes you into the Bella Vista area of Santiago which is known as the bohemian area and has a vibey night life. It is evident as soon as you get out of the little station that the area is different. Lots of restaurants and pubs, lots of brightly coloured houses. A pretty area.
We even found a South African pub, called El Sudafricano. Very strange.
We went home to get our laundry and did not have the energy to go all the way back, so we ended up having dinner at Liguria again, which was a bit of a pity. The second time did not live up to the first. Still a decent meal and nice bottle of red (Santa Ema Cabernet), but just not as good as the first night there.
