Journey to the centre of Thailand...
April 5, 2008
Now that I know I'm leaving Thailand in January, I decided that I better get off my butt and start going to some of the places that I've always wanted to go to. On the top of that list was Sukothai. One of the ancient kingdoms of Thailand that is now a heritage park with cool ruins you can wander around. So the gang all piled in the car and geared up for the drive down. Halfway down we decided to stop in the city of Phitsanoluk to visit a really beautiful temple called Wat Yai and then go to lunch at this cool noodle shop that serves our very favourite type of noodles, ba mii moo dang nam. Mmmmm.... delicious. My partner found out about this restaurant when he was living with a Thai family there doing fieldwork for his PhD. And what a find! Though him and I are still in disagreement about the best ba mii moo dang nam in Thailand. I say it's the shop here in Chiang Mai we go to and he reckons it's the one in Phitsanoluk. Guess we'll just have to have a noodle-off one day!
After our detour to Phitsanoluk, we headed for our final destination Sukothai!

This is a local eatery where you can get a typical Thai dish called ba mii moo dang. It's yellow egg noodles with thinly sliced red pork. You can also get fish balls or wontons with your noodles. You can have the noodles wet (nam) or dry (heng). There is the little problem that you're supposed to write your order in Thai, but we got away with going up and telling them our order in Thai. We can all speak a bit, but none of us can write. You'd definitely need to speak some Thai to go here. No one speaks ANY English.
Something that is unique about this restaurant is that it's on a raised platform and most of the seating is around the edge of this. So you sit with your legs hanging over the edge and your "table" is a counter that runs the length of the edge. Thus the name!
If you're adventurous and want to try a local eatery and for some random reason happen to be in Phitsanoluk, then I would highly recommend this place.
To get there, go to Wat Yai, which is quite famous. If you're facing Wat Yai and the river is at your back, go left. Just walk down the street for a couple blocks or so and you'll see the restaurant on your right. There's a picture of the sign below to help you!
