Punta Sur
June 20, 2007
T and I spent the afternoon at Punta Sur (South Point). El Garrafon National Underwater Park is near there, but we didn’t really go to that. It looked alright, but if you’re not swimming, it doesn’t really seem worth it. We walked a bit to Punta Sur from El Garrafon. There’s a small lighthouse with a pretty view (and a nice breeze), giftshops, and a decently priced restaurant. We walked through Sculptured Spaces, which is a collection donated by several world-renowned sculptors in 2001. At the very southern tip of the island stands what remains of a Maya temple to the goddess Ixchel. It’s not very big, but was pretty neat anyway. Below that, we saw the Cliff of the Dawn, although there’s small chance of either of us actually seeing the dawn from that vantage point. A walkway winds below the bluff from there to El Garrafon. A good trip, very pleasant afternoon other than the heat, of course.

DE-licious! Fresh seafood, prepared to perfection. I had a fish fillet with shrimp, octopus and calamari, all covered in a creamy butter sauce. I could not believe how good it was. My friend had grilled shrimp, and loved that too. Chips with spicy salsa seem to be standard pre-entree fare on the island (similar to a basket of bread in the United States, for example), as do sides of fresh vegetables and rice. All of it was excellent.
Pinguino is a quiet restaurant across from Playa Norte, and is affiliated with the Posada del Mar hotel. The prices were reasonable and the service was good. I highly recommend it!
