Las Vegas - any expectations?

This was the second time in my life I came to explore the strip in Las Vegas. The first time was in 1997, when I was on a tour with my local highscool orchestra from Germany visiting our sister city in Ohio.
This time was different. First of all I was invited to stay with my partners family in a decent hotel - the Aladdin (which is now the Planet Hollywood). Second, 10 years older - and therefore being able to explore the gambling establishments myself - made things a bit easier. And I always refused to believe in the addiction to throwing money out of the window - but it got to me. Luckily we were all able to control our money expenditures and can still lead a decent way of living without having huge debts.
Las Vegas is not real for me - of course, you can see and explore a lot of things, but it is all so far away from being in the right place. If I would like to see Paris - I would go there rather than going to Vegas (if I have the money).
On the other side - that's what Las Vegas is - pure fun, shopping, gambling, and enjoying the easy way of life - at least for some days of the year.
So what expectations should you have when you visit Las Vegas? Be prepared to have a lot of fun and be surprised by what people are able to do in the middle of the desert. Wake the kid in you and go explore this surrealistic place.
Just make sure to watch your expenses when you're gambling.
