Dallas was my stopover on the way to Belize City, and I was excited since I'd never been to Dallas aside from DFW airport (which by the way has a beautiful new terminal!). So, I got in the night before, and checked out the nightlife in Oaklawn which was a lot of fun, and very lively for a weeknight... but this morning, I was determined to see the sights of Dallas, and I only had a few hours before having to catch a cab back to DFW...
Woke up at 7am, grabbed a quick breakfast downstairs, and headed out to the Historic West End. I saw the beautiful courthouse, and the [ugly] JFK memorial, which I had tons more respect for once I found out in was designed by Philip Johnson!!!
I was walking towards the Sixth Floor Museum (the building JFK was allegedly shot from), when a 'bum' started talking to me.
site of jfk's assassination
. "you're lookin for the X's right? they're over there..." etc. etc... What X's? what the hell is he talking about? Well, he explained to me all about the day of the assassination, the motorcade, etc., and showed me where on the street there are two X's - one for where each shot had hit JFK - the first, and the second, fatal, one. If i hadn't run into him, I never would have known... I obviously didn't have time to research too much about Dallasd before I left! It was a great impromptu history lesson, and was glad I met the guy. I said thanks, tipped him, and went on my way to the Museum - which was very interesting (and I'm not a huge museum fan.. i like to be out and about more than inside, but every now and then there's a museum you should see, and this one qualified, especially the conspiracy part!)
From there, I walked all around Downtown, from Union Station to City Hall to the Library.
.. and into the nice Financial District. Of course, I stopped at the starbucks for a green tea latte and took it all in for a few minutes. Then I headed down Pacific Avenue and back to the hotel where my cab driver Kevin was waiting for me. Man it's expensive to cab it to/from DFW! Kevin was a cool guy though, we chatted all the way there, he's from Nigeria, and we were talking about Lagos, and how I want to visit. I took his card and joked about how I'd give him a call when I decide to go to Nigeria and see if his family back there wants to show me around.. haha! You never know who you're gonna meet traveling around! love it!
Got to DFW, checked in, and boarded my flight - Belize City here I come!
