** THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS! ** Spent July & August 2004 in China after graduating from university. I taught English in Jimo in Shandong province for 6 weeks, then travelled around for 3.5 weeks. I came back with over 300 digital photos, and 13 36 exp 35mm films, so expect a few along the way! This is a reflective blog, written 3 years later as I've only just found this site, but I've been wanting to do something like this for a while. ** WORK IN PROGRESS! Will WORK ON WHEN I CAN! **

Hmm, Chengdu is smoggy, crowded and dirty - let's move on

Like the title says, we didn't think much of the city. We had to race across town from the train station to the bus station for the express to Chongqing. While in Xi'an a guy tried to pick pocket Laura's handbag and it was only that I realised he'd definitely followed us into the underpass that I was checking back when I saw him trying to open the zip. So we were both being really careful with our stuff.

Chengdu isn't an easy city to get around. The train journey was fine - not too long as I remember, not an overnight anyway. But trying to communicate to a taxi driver we wanted to go to the bus station wasn't working. We pointed to bus station in our guide book in Mandarin and he just shrugged! Huh...

We found three tourist offices but no one could help us until we found a backpacker who got us a cab driver to get us out of the hustle and bustle, for which we were very grateful!
