Weekend Trip back to the good ol Golden State. I don't know why I'm creating a travelogue for this, since I do it every month, but here goes...

The City

Finally, I made it back to my apartment at around 12 30 am.  I wanted to go to sleep pretty bad, but little did I know that there were tons of people home, playing Settlers of Catan and hanging out.  I actually got to see some friends that I hadn't seen in a while (I'm hollering at you, jess!  Smile at this entry if you read it =P), so it was worth it... until I passed out on the futon while people were still chatting.  Hey, what can I do, I'd been up since 4 am and been on the go the entire day!  I'm no energizer bunny...

Fort Funston is a cool park area overlooking Ocean Beach on the west shore of SF.  The park area is on cliffs facing the beach.  Lots of people are out walking their dogs and strolling with loved ones.  However, what really makes Fort Funston cool are the hangliders.

Fort Funston is also a launching area for hangliders, and one can usually see a few of them in the sky.  It's actually really relaxing to watch the hangliders soar majestically throughout the sky.  I wonder what the birds must think of seeing these huge machines, basically emulating their own floating techniques.

Definitely worth checking out on a nice day in the city.  However, be sure to bring a jacket/sweater, as its extremely windy/chilly.

Mt Davidson is a free hiking area close to Twin peaks in the city.  There's actually a huge cross memorial on the top of the park area, wihch is surprisingly hidden throughout despite its size.  I'd never noticed it before while driving around the city, but now it will always stand out.

The cross is a memorial meant to honor the slaughter of Armenian citizens by the Turkish during WWI.  Over 1.5 million Armenians were killed, which represented over half of the Armenian population at the time.  There were no historical towns in Western Armenia by the end of the war.  Because San Francisco has a large Armenian population, FDR built the memorial here in the city.

The hill that the cross is on has a great view of the city as well.  It gives a different view of downtown than one is used to, as you're looking east onto the financial district. Also, one can clearly see the Twin Peaks TV tower, as well as surrounding areas of Bay Point and Daly City.
