I now have less than 24 hours left in Thailand and will soon be returning to Ann Arbor for the start of what hopefully will be an exciting 2 years. All of my co-travelers exept one have left and she is now in bed and will be flying to Laos tomorrow afternoon. I will be flying to tokyo at about 10:30pm tomorrow night where I have a 12 hour layover to see the city followed by another 12 hour layover in New York city. The last couple of days have been lots of fun.
On our final day as a group we broke into smaller groups so people could all get their final activities done. I went and saw a temple before picking up some of my tailored shirts. I got 1 shirt from a tailor that charged $60 and another from a tailor that charged $30 and I have realized that prices do matter.
We then all met up for a fancier than normal dinner. The ladies all wore informal dresses to go to a nice restaurant in a very trendy and upscale mall. Unfortunately, our table wasn't ready when we arrived and when we were seated they told us we have five minutes to order before the kitchen closes, that they were out of vegetables (we have four vegetarians in our group) and they had none of the cream sauce that four of ordered. We followed this unpleasant meal by a trip to a local Irish pub where we had our final toasts.
Thai nightlife has been quite a bit disappointing and this night was no exception we tried to find a disco or karaoke bar but it appeared that most were closed by 12:30 or 1am so we headed back the hotel.
Today I got my fifth massage of the trip and my first massage from a guy. He twisted by mody in every direction possible for an hour at a cost of $6 and I wouldn't be suprised if I head back for massage #6 tomorrow. Another friend and I also went to see the Bourne Ultimatum today. The theatre was more comfortable and modern than many american theatres and only cost about $4 per person for one of the reserved seats. Other than the thai subtitles the only thing that seemed unique was the one point before the movie when everybody suddenly stood up silently.
I think that is it for me today...more pictures will be posted soon including pictures of the toilet with bum gun. This is the thai 'sanitary method' of cleaning yourself instead of toilet paper. They use this special water gun to clean their rear and honestly I have been pleasantly impressed with the quality of bathrooms here. Great bathrooms should always be the foundation of great countires.
