FREEBIES TO SEE AND TO DO IN SIN CITY
The Aquarium at the Silverton
Located within the cozy Silverton Hotel, a 117,000-gallon saltwater aquarium provides entertainment on a scale one can enjoy only in Las Vegas.

Bonnie & Clyde Getaway Car
This display at Primm Valley Resort & Casino not only includes the original car that the infamous robber couple of the 1930s died in, but also the shirt Clyde died in, old Barrow family photos and a few handmade items manufactured by Clyde himself in prison.

CBS Television City Research Center
Ever thought you could do the job of a network executive, deciding which shows are put on the air and which ones end up in the waste bin? The network jobs are hard to come by, but you can weigh in on the decision-making process by letting your opinions be known at the CBS Television City Research Center at MGM Grand.

Conservatory at Bellagio
Crafted by a team of 100 horticulturalists, the Bellagio's conservatory features elegant, elaborate arrangements of plants and flowers in its bright, airy atrium.

Jean-Philippe Patisserie Chocolate fountian at tha Bellagio
a glass-encased 27 foot high chocolate fountain with 2,100 pounds of melted flowing chocolate to tempt you.

Ethel M Chocolate Factory
Ethel M Chocolates panders to the sweet tooth in all of us. Located seven miles from the Strip, its free admission entices us to the factory, through which many a visitor goes for a behind-the-scenes look at the candy-making (and tasting) process.

Fountains at Bellagio
Every evening, a water and music show plays again and again in the spectacular fountains filling the quarter-mile-long lake in front of the Bellagio.

Fountain shows at Caesars
No civilization put on a greater spectacle than ancient Rome, and now you have a chance to witness the glory for yourself at Caesars Palace's fountain shows.

Fremont Street Experience
The Fremont Street Experience will have you dancing in the street with its $70 million light canopy and 540,000-watt sound system.

Lake of dreams at the Wynn
This is the most peculiar of the "free" shows in several ways: It's not easily defined (not dancing fountains, not a parade in the sky), and it's not easily seen. The 150-foot-tall mountain, complete with mature trees saved from the old Desert Inn golf course, plus several waterfalls, cannot be seen in its entirety from anywhere other than hotel rooms facing west. The show itself can be watched only if you are dining in the Daniel Boulud Brasserie or SW Steakhouse, the Parasol or Chanel bars, or a small viewing platform set above those venues on the casino level. Nab a coveted spot there or else pay double (or more) digits to dine or drink while waiting for the shows. Should you bother? Maybe. Basically, twice an hour, the lake lights up with pretty colors, cued to tunes ranging from classical to Louis Armstrong for "interludes." At the top of the hour are bigger extravaganzas of weird hologram erotic-psychedelic images projected on the wall waterfall, while shapes and puppets pop out for even more wacky action, with some rather adult imagery at times. Not worth an overpriced drink unless you can nurse it all night, but the restaurants are good enough to try, so the shows are a bonus. Note that if you can't get a table outside, you do have to go there to see the shows properly. Shows are every 20 minutes, from 7pm to midnight.

Las Vegas Preview Studios
Take part in the advertising and product testing of a wide array of products, including movie trailers, television shows, slot machines and even food. Become a part of the process and give your opinion on the latest products.

Lion Habitat at MGM Grand
One look into the MGM Grand's lion habitat and you'll be hooked. The majestic cats command adoration whether they're chasing a large ball, licking their immense paws or just lyin' around.

Marjorie Barrick Museum
With displays of Western culture, desert life and the history of ancient Mexico, the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History is both educational and vibrant.

Masquerade Village and "parade in the sky" at the Rio
It's Mardi Gras Vegas-style at the Rio's Masquerade Village. Revelers are immersed in the sights and sounds of the world's most famous carnival. don't forget to look up, the masquerade parade in the sky. try to catch some beads.

M&M's World
M&M's World may be the most delicious attraction in Vegas. And judging by its scores of visitors, M&M's World must be doing something right.

Living Garden Show
The Palazzo Hotel offers a FREE show. Located at the waterfall towards the entrance of the canal shoppes to the Venetian.

Neon Museum
The open-air museum was created by the city of Las Vegas to preserve these vital pieces of Vegas history.

The Sirens of TI
Part muse, part temptress, part pirate, watch as the Sirens of TI battle a band of pirates in Sirens' Cove, located at the front entrance of the popular hotel and casino.

Streetmosphere
The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian adds a little 'Streetmosphere' to the shopping experience, providing fun and entertainment for all that visit.

Sunset Stampede
Take a symphonic journey through the Wild West at Sam's Town.

Volcano at the Mirage
Every hour after dusk, the Mirage volcano explodes forth for crowds of curious Strip onlookers.

Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo
The Flamingo's brilliant neon sign is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable on the Strip. And visitors can take a closer look at the creatures who inspired the bright display at the hotel-casino's very own wildlife habitat.

Floyd Lamb State Park
Named after the former state Sen. Floyd Lamb, visitors can escape the city hype and sit amongst ponds, scenic paths and picnic areas at Floyd Lamb State Park, located in northwest Las Vegas. Many will be surprised by this attraction's history -- in the late 1920s, the Tule Springs Ranch inside this park served as a dude ranch for prospective divorcees. It also served as a cattle and vegetable ranch. Visitors can plan a fishing trip here as well.

Grapevine Canyon near Laughlin
Located in the Newberry Mountains between Searchlight and Laughlin, visitors venturing to Grapevine Canyon can witness ancient petroglyphs left by early Native Americans. For a little humor on your day trip, make sure to check out Christmas Tree Pass, where you'll see trees decorated with beer cans, plastic jugs and unmentionables.

Hot Springs
Want the Jacuzzi experience, but don't want to skip out on the nature scene? Believe it or not, Nevada is home to approximately 300 hot springs.

Lake Mead
Considered the largest man-made lake in the United States, Lake Mead is a short drive from Las Vegas. Visitors can swim, jet ski, sunbathe and relax at this attraction. Hoover Dam is also right next door.

Hoover Dam
is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada. When completed in 1935, it was both the world's largest electric power producing facility and the world's largest concrete structure. It was surpassed in both respects by the Grand Coulee Dam in 1945. It is currently the world's 34th largest hydroelectric generating station

Popular for its crisp, fresh breezes and various hiking trails, Mount Charleston is only a short trip away from the Strip. Part of the Spring Mountain Range, Mount Charleston rises as high as 12,000 feet in elevation. Wildflowers, waterfalls and a variety of trees can be seen here. For a quick getaway from the city, cabins and campsites are also available.

Red Rock Canyon
Located only 15 miles west of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon offers a quiet, secluded escape filled with greenery, unique plants, petroglyphs, wild animals and much more.

Red Rock Climbing Center
If you're seeking the thrill of rock climbing but aren't quite ready to take on the outdoors, then the Red Rock Climbing Center is for you. This facility features more than 9,000 square feet of climbing space.

Spring Mountain Ranch
Inside the Red Rock Canyon, the 520-acre Spring Mountain Ranch is a perfect place to have a picnic. The sprawling green pastures, quietness and fresh air make it a pleasant area to relax and have lunch. Inside the ranch house, tour guides are available to walk visitors through and share remarkable history of former residents including Howard Hughes.

TRAVELING ON A BUDGET
Looking to book your vacation in Vegas but can't get a good room rate or even a flight? You may find out how to avoid the crowds and get a good rate.

If it's still a mystery, research on when UFC tournaments, boxing matches, conventions, concerts and other events that may draw additional visitors. Californians can expect the four-and-a-half-hour drive to take six to eight hours on these weekends.

January
New Year's Eve/Day
BOOK VERY EARLY
Room rates sometimes are doubled, so book early to get a good rate. Beauty salons will be booked to the hilt for the big night and many restaurants will be doing extravagant New Year's dinner packages. If you're driving back to California, expect the four-and-a-half-hour drive to take six to eight hours. You'd be better off sticking around an extra day if you can. For New Year's Eve events, click here .

CES- first week
BOOK VERY EARLY
The Consumer Electronics Show draws 115,000 conventioneers for a week looking at the latest in gadgetry. Watch out for limited flights and corporate-booked room blocks.

Super Bowl Weekend
BOOK VERY EARLY
One of the bigger weekends in Vegas. The busiest weekend for sports books. For Super Bowl parties, click here .

February
Valentine's Day
BOOK EARLY
If this day falls on or near a weekend, count on the hotels being busy. A huge number of people flock to Vegas every Valentine's Day to get married, so booking a chapel might be a challenge. Regardless of what day Valentine's falls on, many restaurants will feature dinner specials for two. For Valentine's Day suggestions, click here .

Men's Apparel Guild of CA (MAGIC)- third week
BOOK EARLY
Once dedicated to just men's clothes, this convention that brings in over 110,000 people now includes women's fashion. Expect celebs galore either hawking their own clothing line, or just getting a sneak preview of what they'll be wearing to the next awards ceremony.

President's Day Weekend
BOOK VERY EARLY
This is one of the first holidays of the year. Plus, it's still freezing in many parts of the country. Many visitors book their late-winter vacations to take advantage of the extra days off.

March
NASCAR
BOOK VERY EARLY
This event has been held in Vegas for several years and it draws an insane number of racing fans. The various driving experiences (CART Driving 101, Richard Petty Driving Experience and the Derek Daly racing school) have fewer track opportunities because of NASCAR's use of the track. Also, the race-related NASCAR Cafe tends to be packed this time of year.

ShoWest- first or second week
BOOK EARLY
A movie theater convention which brings a number of Hollywood stars to town. Get your autograph book ready.

St. Patrick's Day
BOOK EARLY
Perhaps not a recognized holiday in some circles, Vegas will look for any reason to celebrate. In this case, everyone's Irish for a day, or even a weekend, and the Irish pubs around town will be bursting at the seams. For places to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, click here .

March Madness- mid March-early April
BOOK EARLY
College Basketball fans go nuts for the finals and the opportunity to watch the big games on the massive televisions found in Vegas sport books. Expect sports books to be crowded, especially during the first week of April for the final games.

Spring Break / Easter- Varies
BOOK EARLY
College students and families, especially from the still cold East Coast, flock to Vegas to enjoy sunshine and Vegas entertainment. Expect the restaurants, hotels, shopping and entertainment to be busy but not unbearably busy.

April
National Association of Broadcasters
- first week
BOOK EARLY
For all things broadcasting, this convention keeps growing every year. Expect the fancier restaurants to stay packed for this week.

May
Cinco de Mayo
BOOK EARLY
Like anyone needs an excuse to drink margaritas and eat chips and salsa. This holiday is a time to celebrate with a Mexican flair. For places to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, click here .

Memorial Day Weekend
BOOK VERY EARLY
This is a big one. The three-day weekend is an excuse for a non-stop party for many out-of-towners and locals.

June
CineVegas - usually second week
BOOK EARLY
Vegas' premiere film festival brings lots of celebrities, which means many of the high-end hotels and restaurants will be packed. Great week for star-gazing and seeing some fabulous movies.

July
Fourth of July
BOOK EARLY
If this falls on a weekend, the Fourth will be busy. Drinking, gambling, 100-plus degree heat and illegal fireworks -- what could be better? Stick to the hotel sponsored fireworks extravaganzas if you want to avoid trouble with the police. For Fourth of July celebrations, click here .

August
Men's Apparel Guild of CA (MAGIC) - usually the third week
BOOK EARLY
Once dedicated to just men's clothes, this convention that brings in over 110,000 people now includes women's fashion. Expect celebs galore either hawking their own clothing line, or just getting a sneak preview of what they'll be wearing to the next awards ceremony.

September
Labor Day Weekend
BOOK VERY EARLY
Any three-day weekend usually draws crowds to Vegas, and this one is no exception. For Labor Day weekend events, click here .

October
Columbus Day Weekend
BOOK VERY EARLY
See Labor Day weekend above.

Halloween
BOOK EARLY
Halloween can get pretty crazy in Vegas. Several of the nightclubs sponsor huge costume blowouts and with the risque nature of this town and the volume of professional dancers, well, let's just say leave grandma at home. If Halloween falls on or near a weekend, rooms may be harder to get or more expensive. For Halloween events, click here .

November
Veterans Day Weekend
BOOK VERY EARLY
See Labor Day weekend above.

Thanksgiving Weekend- beginning the third Thursday
BOOK VERY EARLY
A surprising number of families use the four-day weekend as an excuse to hit the Strip and enjoy a fancy Thanksgiving dinner out, where the likelihood of being served dried-out turkey decreases dramatically. Many restaurants serve expansive and expensive Thanksgiving specials and discounted rooms and flights will be harder to come by.

December

NFR- early December
BOOK RIDICULOUSLY EARLY
By the time the National Finals Rodeo is over, tickets for the following year will be just about sold out. A hugely popular event, country-Western bars and strip clubs will be packed to the gills. Rooms and flights will be harder to get. Bring your cowboy hat! For more NFR events, click here .

Holiday Season
BOOK VERY EARLY
After Thanksgiving, the entire holiday season becomes another excuse for many family members to use their additional vacation time and spend it attempting to double their holiday bonuses. Malls will be crowded with last-minute shoppers and many restaurants will offer elaborate Christmas dinners. Many Californians will drive in, so the traffic will once again be brutal and should stay that way until New Year's Day. Book very early if you're hoping to get good airfare and room rates.
