My final, delicious breakfast at Asa Wright. :'(

Today I got up a bit after 6:30 am, and I was excited to be heading to Tobago. Yesterday while ushering at the wedding one of the Asa Wright staff told me that if I thought Trinidadians were friendly (which I did), then I’d really be amazed how warm Tobagonians were. About half of the wedding party was going, while the others returned to the States. Trinidad and Tobago are separated by only 27 miles of water, so we had the option of taking a three-hour ferry to Tobago or a 20 minute flight. We opted for the latter.

We were headed to Le Grand Courlan Spa Resort, a beautiful spa located on Tobago’s southwestern coast. I had expected little from Asa Wright – after all, it was a nature center that focused on birding, not a hotel that specialized in hosting guests.

I'm going to miss eating by that large open window.
However, my experience there was so great that I expected to be completely wowed by Grand Courlan. I was wowed, to be sure, but not in the manner I had expected.

The reception process at Le Grand Courlan was mind-bogglingly awful. Let me put it into perspective: I’ve been a Project Manager and a Business Analyst for years. I’ve seen horrible management in industries large and small, but never in my life have I seen anything so completely incompetent. I’m writing this eight days after returning to the States and I’m still sickened by what I saw.  I mean, it takes real work to screw something up that badly. At Asa Wright we were tired from a long day of traveling and we had scarcely entered the lobby before we were handed keys to our rooms and told we could return to the main desk and check in after we had dropped off our luggage.

Greg (in the shades) in the Tobago airport as we waited for our bags to be unloaded.
It happened so quickly that I wondered if the staff was disorganized and if we would experience problems later. It was the quickest and least painful hotel checkin I have ever experienced. In contrast, when we checked in at Grand Courlan... I won’t bore you with a long list of lamentations (read my review of the Grand Courlan for that), so I’ll just say that for more than two hours later some of us stood around waiting in the hot, non-air conditioned lobby for our rooms.

After we finally got to our rooms everything was nice enough. I tried to forget my experiences and see things objectively. The view of the ocean was lovely, and the room was adequate. It certainly could have been worse, I suppose. I had been so spoiled by the marvelous time I had at Asa Wright that the shock and horror of Le Grand Courlan hit me like boiling water poured into a frozen glass. We regrouped around 7 pm and found our way next door to The Seahorse Inn, a lovely place where we dined and enjoyed ourselves for the evening.
