After our long journey back from Foz we arrived in Rio and went to our first destination the Copacabanna were we stayed at the hostel - Stone of the Beach. The hostel was just as we expected, so friendly and in the heart of one of the most vibrant and famous areas of the city.
The Copacabanna is exactly as glamourous as one would expect, actually even more so. It reminded Emma of LA with men working out along the boulevard and women as scanterly clad as you would expect!! There seems to be a definate health obbession in this area of the city, walking along the see front it was not cars you had to watch for but instead people of all ages on bikes, roller skates, skateboards & the joggers!
Whilst residinng in Copacabanna Andy got his wish of not only visiting the Maracana, the worlds largest and perhaps most famous stadium, but also to watch a match on the 2nd evening. Indeed being placed in the middle of the Botafogo fans proved an exciting and colourful experience for both of us, with Emma chanting along to the catchy tunes and Andy intensly watching the game, a top of the table clash between Botafogo and Sao Paulo! We really felt comfortable and felt engrossed in the atmosphere that one could only describe as electric with drums, fireworks, huge fags and a vocal support adding to the spectacle, even if the result did go against our adopted team!! (god knows how crazy the fans may have gone if Botafogo actually scored!!). We would really recommend seeing a game to any visiters to the city, after seeing a game in Argentina we were alottle anxious, however the atmosphere was not at all agressive & in fact one of our best experiences of the city.
Upon returning to the hostel we decided for the remaining 5 nights we wanted to spent our time in a nicer and quiter environment so we opted to move to a lovely pousada in the hip and trendy area of the city Ipanema, and with it plenty of designer boutiques and ice cream parlours to entertain Emma!!! It was from here that we aimed to relax on the worlds trendiest beach, and with it all mannor of posers, favella children and surfers galore!
