Bora Bora's lagoon from the air

After the short plane ride over from Tahiti, we past over several atolls with their guardian reefs, and arrived at the small, open-air, thatched-roof airport of Bora Bora. We found the correct water-taxi (20ish seat boat) and motored our way across the gleaming, blue lagoon to the Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort. The overwater bungalows came into view with the sun setting behind them, and "wow"...What a sight!

We were greeted with cool towels and a refreshing, tooty-frooty drink (may have even had an umbrella in it!) while they prepared to process the arriving guests. The reception area was all open air, right on the beach with a gleaming, white sand floor.

We got walked about 10 minutes out along the wooden pathways of the lagoon to our OWB...right on the end, with an unobstructed view of the lagoon and Mt. Otemanu in the centre of Bora Bora. This resort isn't on the main island of Bora Bora, but was on its own, little private island (motu) and the guests have this small piece of South Seas paradise all to them selves.

Once we got into the "room", holy cow! It was all hand carved, local wood with traditional artwork and designs. The furnishings were all plush and shiny, the bathroom was huge with a huge tub, and it had 2 private, wooden decks. Well, I reviewed the property too, so I won't gush (too much) more here. Needless to say: I was really impressed. After I had almost retrieved my jaw from the floor, and had pinched myself a few times, given my location and the surroundings, we prepared for dinner.

What a destination!

We didn't remember signing up for a meal plan, so we were expecting to pay for dinner. The restaurant was super-cool, like the OWB, and we ate. I tried the poisson cru which is a local dish of cold fish soup! Hey, when's the next time I'll be in Bora Bora? I think it was about $100US for the two of us, plus about $15US for EACH mixed drink!! *gulp* I nursed that Rum & Coke real good. Fortunately, we planned ahead by picking up a bottle from our stop at LAX, as we knew booze would be pricey.

Headed back to the OWB along the now-well-lit walkways over the water and saw ghostly looking stingray and sharks that had moved into the shallows, now that night had fallen. Really an inexplicably cool experience! I tried not to think about the offensively high price of all of this...It was our honeymoon! There were glasstop night-tables and a coffee table in the bedroom that we could look down into the water below and see the rays and sharks under our hut. We were giddy as kids on Christmas morning. How could anywhere be cooler than this?
