Ilha Santa Catarina: Kerry and Campos (a former colleague and friend).

KERRY - After another night bus journey we arrived in Floripa (as the locals call it) at about 9am. I was planning on meeting a couple of my old work friends from the BMA, here for dinner, but little did i expect the warm hospitality that we received!

I was about to get my bags together and look for a place to stay when i was tapped on the back of my shoulder by someone and heard my name - it was my friend from work Anjos, who had come to collect us from the bus station and take us to his house! IT was so great to see him, and he too was also a bit emotional, which was really sweet. His wife has also come to collect us, and so I met her for the first time - Isabella who was also a really sweet lady. They lived in a village 20 km from Floripa called Santa Amara de Imperatize which was a lovely little town.

My other friend Campos, called over to their apartment that afternoon and we enjoyed a traditional brazilian BBQ which i had heard so much about when working with them in London. Later on Campos drove Andrei and I to the Island of Santa Catarina to see some of the beaches and scenery. I can now understand why they had told me to come and see  them in Brazil, as it is truley a beautiful place. The island is made up of 42 different beaches and over the next 5 days we saw a good few of them. The weather was hot and sunny so at last we could ditch our rain coats and put on our shorts and T shirts!

We also made friends with my friend Campos´s nephew called Emerson and his wife Nadji. They to were so friendly an hospitable to us, it blew us both away. We spent the Wednesday with Emerson as he took us on a tour of the southern beaches of the Island of Santa Catarina, and had lunch at a lovely restaurant where we gorged ourselves on sea food and soaked up the sun while sipping caipairihias and beer.

This is the life!!

Andrei also did paragliding in Santa Amara, an experience he loved and wants to do again somewhere else on this trip if he can.

It was just so nice to be living with normal people for a while and staying in a house with all the home comforts that you miss when you are travelling for a while. The week was great and we will never forget it, it was one of the highlights of our trip. It was lovely to meet Anjos´s daughters - Yasmin aged 8 and little Annabella who is only 11 months and spend time with them. Even though we have hardly any Portuguese, Yasmin was very patient with us and tried to communicate with us all the time.

This week was a great welcome to Brazil and we even shed a few tears when we got on the bus for Rio as we  were so touched by our new friend´s kindness.
