Gorgeous!
KERRY - What a difference to Belo Horizonte! This town is beautiful and definitley worth a visit! We took the bus from Belo Horizonte (1 hr 45 mins) and stayed 1 night here and found a lovely little pousada - a bit pricey but so nice! The town dates back 1711 and has 13 churches in all, set among the winding cobbled streets. We wandered around for a good few hours taking in the sights and enjoying the peace and quiet from the previous city we had been in. It is a little touristy and you should look around for cheaper places to eat, but you can find them!
While we were standing in the main square deciding what to do next a band appeared drumming and singing. The crowd grew larger as people began to follow them down the streets dancing as they went - it was really cool. People dressed up on stilts also appeared and joined in. We had no idea what it was about , but it was really nice to see!
We ended the day drinking some beers at our pousada watching the sun set before we headed out for some dinner.
One tip - be prepared to walk up steep hills here! it is very hilly!
This pousada is a little gem! We came accross it when looking for another hostel that was in the lonely planet and now no longer exists! It reminded me of a B and B that you would find at home - all the rooms were gorgeous and had en suite facilites and was such a homely and welcoming place that it was a shame we only had 1 night there!
We paid 90 reals a night - about 23 pounds for a double room.
Breakfast was also nice, the only thing missing was the eggs and bacon you would have gotten at home!
