I spent a month in Sorrento, Italy in the Summer of 2006, taking a summer painting class. I painted, ate great food, and watched Italians celebrate thier team's World Cup victory. VIVA AZZURRI!

Napoli!

Today we went on our first day-trip to Naples. It was amazing. We went to a church where Caravaggio's The Seven Acts of Mercy was commissioned for and where it is still displays. Just a normal (though beautiful) Catholic church where people go to mass and services everyday. And the Caravaggio just hangs out there at the front by the alter. It's beautiful and accessible and I think more art should be in churches like that instead of museums. The 2nd Caravaggio of the day was in a Museum that used to be a hunting lodge. It was The Flagilation of Christ. A beautiful museum. Really. Amazing. Wow. So this Caravaggio almost made me cry. Just the history of the painter and his genius added to the subject matter and it's personal meaning - it was almost overwheming.

In other news, Italy beat the Ukraine the other day and this town erupted (like Vesuvius!). Vespas and young people and green and white and red and foghorns and carhorns and fireworks and joy and happiness in ones country and a love of sport. And the morning after the flags still and they all still love Italia!
