Day One.

Well so we finally got here ok, despite some intial set backs we've finally managed to land in Germany.

We're staying in the Meininger hostel in Berlin which is fantastic, in a really oldy worldy part of the city but none theless still a really nice place.

Having not got any really sleep the night before Alex and I decided to, quite madly, embark on a four hour bike tour of the city. It turned out the tour was amazing, our tour guide Mike, an American living in Berlin as an art student, was great he took us to all of the sights in Berlin, The Brandenburg gate, the Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and so forth. Mike was great he made the history of the city really interesting and full of random stories and anecdotes. There was a group of about 31 of us all riding through the city, which was an adventure in itself. Not only are the bikes really random, they only have hand brakes on one side, but trying to heard 30 of us, single file round the roads of the city was no mean feat. We did manage the whole four hours with only a couple of casualties, there was one woman who kept fall off her bike!! woops. the tour was a great way for us to see the city abd doing it on bikes was also a great way to do, so quick and easy and also something we'd never do at home. I couldnt imagine ever wanting to cycle through the streets of inner london as part of a group of thirty, i'd think we'd all fear for our lives!

One of the things we visited on the tour was a Jewish war memorial, which was slap bang in the middle of the city's busiest district and consisted of löots of huge concrete blocks in varying sizes. It was very abstract but walking through them everyone seems to gain different things from the experience in terms of their feelings and also how they have interpreted the artists intentions. We finished the tour by going to this art area withinm the city which is full of galleries, all open air, it had a really hippy feel to it. That was where we decided to spend the evening, in a little italian restaurant watching the world do by. A great way to spend our first night.
