Oasis tour
June 29, 2007
When we returned to Amazer to pick up Ritga and his brother we decided to start driving in the afternoon after it cooled down. We napped and then went for a visit to the town's oasis. On the way to their plot of land, we passed a lady bathing her child in the irrigation channels, and on all sides there were old boxes of laundry detergent that had been thrown around. Before the market of foreign goods opened up to these people; before Tide sold its laundry detergent, they only used things things that were biodegradable. Now they still have the same custom of leaving the trash thrown about. But this time it does not go away.
We got to their land and they showed us that they were growing pomegranates and couscous.
We sat by the irrigation system and drank fanta and coca cola, the bottles of which they proceded to throw on the ground after they finished the drinks.
We wanted to wash our hands in the river, but they told us to stay away from it because rattlesnakes lived in the rocks around it.
