Madrid, Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu and some steep bits in-between...

I shall add more to this in the future, but for now...

I took part in a charity trek to Peru in June 2006, the goal was to reach the lost city of Machu Picchu by trekking along the Inca trail from Cuzco.

It was the single most amazing experience of my life and it has changed my outlook on things completely. On a journey like that, you cannot help but be stunned by the surroundings, the people, the history and the challenge. You cannot wish to meet more friendly people than the Incan/Peruvian inhabitants of Cuzco and Machu Picchu and the mountains in-between. They live their lives mostly with smiles on their faces, they have quite a simple life up there, but who says a Playstation 3 and a tv can solve all your problems and make you happy? I was struck by the fact that they wont beg you for money. They have hundreds of hand made woolen Llama finger puppets to offer in return for your dollars. Seven of which sit in my bedroom, a great example of the pride of these lovely people, my room would be full of little keep sakes like these if the rest of the people in the world took the same outlook on getting money from travellers.

From the stunning ride as your plane sweeps in between the peaks of the Andes to settle in this remote city, to the market bursting at the seems with amazing colours and mind boggling smells, the place captures the imagination and your heart. It is brimming with history and our amazing guide Luis helped breath even more life into it all.

To be continued...
