Saqqarah and the first pyramid
April 29, 2007
After we left Giza, we drove only a short distance to Saqqarah. It is on this site that the very first pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Zoser, was built. It was designed and constructed by the architect Ihmotep, and was built with different tiers, sort of like a wedding cake. There are other pyramids on the site, but the Step Pyramid stands out because of it's design and it's history. It is known as the prototype for the rest of the pyramids.
We walked around the pyramid and the surrounding ruins. Unfortunately, you can't go inside any of the pyramids here, but it was still neat to look around. There are actually many pyramids in Egypt outside of the three in Giza, but the others are often overlooked...they should not be!

Although the pyramids in Giza are the most well known in Egypt, there are other pyramids in that very area that are often overlooked. One such location is Saqqarah. On this site still stands the first pyramid ever constructed in Egypt. This pyramid, called the Step Pyramid of Zoser, was designed by the architect Imhotep. This man, later known to the Egyptians as a god, is the mummy from the movies of the same name. While these pyramids may not be quite as impressive as the Giza pyramids, it's a neat experience to see the evolution of pyramids during the times of the pharaoh. Saqqarah is a very short drive from the pyramids at Giza, and included in this day trip can be Memphis (the old capital of Egypt) and Dahshur.
