Monument Marathon

Outside Union Station

Washington DC is a city I never get tired of, though I have visited it many times now. The most famous sights to visit are the majestic monuments, and even if seen before, never fail to impress one with a sense of awe. They convey, in some sense, the essence of a great nation that is the United States of America. I say this because behind the grand scale and imposing forms there is a humble nature of the beginnings of democracy, going back to the Greeks, and of the men who laid the foundations America based on these ancient principles and aware of its humble beginnings. The founding Fathers of America didn't consider themselves above other men, but all men as equals. They made mistakes too and the continuation of slavery as a practice was one of them.

It reminds us that they were human too and that, even with the best of intentions, there is always a thin line between freedom and tyranny. As the seat of government, the federal buildings are like monuments themselves, often with classical greek architecture and sculpture forms to convey the principles underlying democratic rule. Some of these federal buildings span entire city blocks and incorporate the traditions of democracy in their structure with symbols, words or relief sculpture. Scattered among the large monuments and federal buildings are the smaller statues, each one telling a story of the history of a nation. Taken as a whole, Washington DC does give a sense of what ancient Rome must have been like in appearance, but the parallell ends there, and DC is a standing tribute to freedom and recognition of peace as a virtue, whereas Rome was a tribute to power and recognition of war as something glorious.
Brian and Liberty Bell replica
One may argue the pros and cons of such a debate and Roman rule was not without its virtues too, but it was fundamentally a dictatorship ruled by an autocracy.  While some may argue whether America does have its autocratic side, it also has its checks and balances in the form of branches of government, all of which can be seen in DC, together as a whole to form something greater than its parts.

This entry represents a walking tour in the form of a "Monument Marathon" as I call it. Washington DC is a place best seen by foot. One can take various bus tours of DC, though relatively expensive in my opinion, but I think one misses out on many things that way. An alternative title to this blog entry may be "DC in a Day", but that is overstating things a bit,  as if one could see everything here in a day.
Deleware Avenue ahead - to the Capitol Building
Nevertheless, it covers most of the major sights from a monument perspective, so "Monument Marathon" is more appropriate. It takes a good 6-8 hours to see everything pictured here, but can be done with a good breakfast, a decent pair of walking shoes, and willingness to explore on foot. Some advice about DC, when out walking all day, is to always carry some water with you. Some sections of DC, like the walk around the tidal basin, there are no vendors for drinks here, though you may find water fountains in the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial about half way around. Rangers of The U.S. National Park Service, who work amongst the various memorials and museums, always remind people to drink plenty of liquids, when the opportunity to advise arises. That's good advice well heeded. The rangers are there to watch over the monuments and memorials, but to take care of you on your stay in DC too.  If you need assistance, seek them out for help and they are more than willing to offer aid. Now, on with the Marathon...

Some parallels there. The neoclassical architecture prevalent in DC reminds me a bit of walking around Rome too. The Romans have much in the Greek culture to thank as well.
