The outside of the Misión Planeta recycling center outside Puerto Viejo de Limón.
One day towards the middle of the first week we were on the reserve, we took a trip to the Misión Planeta recycling center. A few of the Bri Bri run it and so far, it's been very successful. All throughout Puerto Viejo and the surrounding areas, you can find recycling bins that contain trash that will later make it's way to Misión Planeta. Many people are concerned with the environment in Costa Rica and this is just one example of that.

Although most of my group hated the recycling center, I thought it was really cool. I guess it's just how I've been brought up, by my parents...who LOVE recycling. We recycle anything our town will take.
In the process of being taught which bottles go where.
Being at the recycling center in Puerto Viejo was really cool because it gave me an idea of where the bottles and cans go after you put them in the recycling bin...as well as the work put into sorting them.

Michael, the guy in charge of us for the day, showed us what bottles go where and how to sort everything. Basically, there were big trash bags just full of soda cans and bottles and glass, as well as things that definitely are not recyclable. I don't think anyone had sorted anything at the center in quite a while, and because of the heat, everything had a funk to it. That was not cool...but I got past the smell and had some fun sorting green bottles from the light green and clear bottles, as well as the brown, green and clear glass...I even found a glass that had the Pringles logo on it that I took home with me. Haha, yes...that's right, I took a souvenier home from the recycling center.

Since there were so many of us, and most of the group just wanted to get as far away as possible from the smell of Misión Planeta, we finished sorting everything well before noon and were given the afternoon off. We went into Puerto Viejo for some swimming and food. It felt good to relax after doing something that I know helped make this world a better place. It was a nice reward.
