A good day at the races

A couple of years back I had the opportunity to spend the day at Laguna Seca Raceway watching the SCCA sports car races. There were several races throughout the day for the various classifications.
Laguna Seca Raceway as it was known then is now sponsored by Mazda so they throw their name at the beginning now.
We got up well before sunrise to make the drive from our home in the valley across to the coast and north to the Salinas/Monterey region where the track is located. At that time I owned a small Toyota MR2 two-seater sports car myself so the drive would be a fun ride. The first hour across the San Joaquin was straight and boring, but after leaving Coalinga the road goes through the foothills towards the coast and it becomes curvy, twisty and a blast to drive at a little more than speed limits.
It was still dark and as we came around one corner there was an owl down on the road eating what another car had already run over. His eyes shown in my headlights as I swiftly approached and with one flap of his five-foot spread wings he lifted himself above my speeding car just in time to miss me, or visa versa. I think my eyes were as wide as his for a moment, thinking I was going to hit him. He couldn't have missed us by two feet or less. Thank goodness I was in a low sports car.
The rest of the ride was uneventful and we made it to the races by about 9 a.m. and spend the whole day enjoying. As you can see from the last pictures, the sun was rapidly dropping into the ocean as they finished the races.
