Day Eight
March 23, 2006
We actually tendered into Devil's Island, but that doesn't seem to be accepted! Here we toured the island, in fantastically hot weather (much to the annoyance of everyone who went - except me!). As an ex-penal colony it was a rather stark reminder of the sort of thing that prisoners used to be faced with. The cells we visited were no wider than an arms span, and were in total darkness. The heat would definatly have proved too much in the solitary confiment areas, with limited air holes. If you have read/seen Papillon then you will have some idea o the conditions. A definate highlight was seeing sea turtles swimming around the jetty as we waited for our tender to take us back to our ship.
