Salzburg and the Austrian Alps

Schloss Mirabell

The hills are alive...or something like that.  Most people come to Salzburg because of the Sound of Music, I have still never seen the movie.  I came to see the Alps and the beautiful countryside that western Austria has to offer.  I was not disappointed with Salzburg...in fact, quite the opposite.  It is one of the more well known cities in western Austria, perhaps because of the Sound of Music or even Mozart.  I came expecting to find a very touristy city, and although the hostels play the Sound of Music every night, the city and it's people were great.

Although I personally didn't have an interest in the Sound of Music, I still decided that I would take some time to see some of the sites during my two days there.

Residenzplatz of Salzburg
I started off by walking from my hostel to Schloss Mirabell, with it's beautiful gardens seen in the movie.  After spending some time there, I crossed the river Salzach and headed into the city centre of the town.  It was there I found a supermarket where I grabbed some lunch.  I went and ate it on some old steps while I did some people watching.  Finishing lunch, I walked to the Salzburg Cathedral.

As strange as it sounds, in the square right near the cathedral, there were several...rather expensive cars on show.  We're talking Ferraris here!  The really strange part was Ronald McDonald up on stange talking in German at this event.  He talked too fast for me to understand what he was saying, and my German's not that good anyway.  So, I never figured out why the cars were there, but it was cool to see them all.

After leaving the area, I headed through the shopping district of town and found the imposing Dom, another church in the area.  After that, I made my way back across the river and climbed a smaller hill near the town that offered some great views.  I took some photos there and stopped back at the hostel, where I met up with two people I had met in Vienna.  We ventured back out into the city, and headed over to Mozart's birthplace.  It is a self guided tour, and contains many relics from his life.  It was neat, but not terribly interesting unless you are really into Mozart.  After visiting there, we for some reason headed over to Mozart's childhood home, and did the same thing...by that time we were defintely Mozarted out.

We called it a day and found a cute little restaurant near the hostel to eat dinner at.  I had no plans to watch the Sound of Music, so I ventured back out into the city at night, just to check things out.
