Hopping over to Amsterdam from London is so quick and easy it's almost laughable. The Netherlands is also a very accessible country, making it simple to negotiate around the capital and even to venture outside Amsterdam to some of its other cities. And of course there is always so much to occupy your time in this beautiful spot. The canals themselves are pretty amazing (and clean!), you don't have to go far to find a superb pancake house, the architecture is stunning and the shopping isn't too bad either. Then there are the coffee shops and the infamous Red Light District... always worth a venture into even if it is just to see what it is all about. What lets Amsterdam down, unfortunately, are the rowdy gangs of visitors on wild weekends away for stag and hen parties. The massive and continuous influx of foreigners looking to cash in on liberal attitudes to drugs and prostitution understandably make locals wary and you therefore don't get quite as much of a sense of what it is like to live in Amsterdam. But no mind! This city is more than interesting enough to capture the attention of the most jaded traveller and well worth adding to your list of must-sees.
