Back again in wonderful Budapest. I remembered the city as very beautiful, full of art, full of wonderful buildings and traces of the history when Hungary was somewhat bigger than today and centre of European culture.

A Saturday in Budapest

Cute little bear

Last time I was in Budapest was more than 3 years ago and in January. I was really looking forward to see this wonderful city in the summer and out of the grey that tend to gloom your mood a bit. Kaija had never been to Hungary before, so for her it was the first time in Budapest and she didn't really know what to expext. I remembered the city as very beautiful, full of art, full of wonderful buildings and traces of the history when Hungary was somewhat bigger than today and centre of European culture.

Kaija and me enjoying the view - I think I do a bit more than her:D

Budapest is a rather big city with 1,9 million inhabitants and covering 525km2. It’s a fairly green city and build around the massive Donau that split the city in two, the two old cities of Buda and Pest. On the Buda side you will find the beautiful "Gellért" Mountain and the hill with the massive castle construction. On the other side you find the city with the beautiful Parliament. I think that it´s almost a look-a-like to Prague seen from above - but there are a lot different things in the cities.

Arriving in the airport, we were greeted with wonderful weather close to 30 degrees - it was what we had hoped for and our smiles started to get stuck on our faces.

Ohhhh - these coins looks nice!
In the airport we took a taxi to our hotel and it worked very well. We had booked at the City Matyas Hotel which was close to the walking street Váci and almost next to Donau on the Pest side. Our room was not ready when we arrived so we just left our suitcase at the hotel and left for a walk in town. We walked down the Váci passing all the restaurants and antiques shops ending at the indoor market Központi Vásárcsarnok - a very nice market with wonderful fruit, vegetables, sausages and spices - and tourist stuff. On first floor you will find all the souvenirs you can imagine.

"We bought some sausages which always are nice when you come home and have forgotten the scents of the city. We left and found a restaurant with cold drinks and some nice sandwiches. We went back to the hotel and got our room. The room was fine - and lovely cold, which was very nice when it was so hot outside. Later in the afternoon we walked the other way starting at the oldest church in town Belvárosi Plébániatemplon and then down on the Váci until Vörösmarty ter were we then went along the Donau until we crossed it at the chain bridge. Here we took the cable trolley Sikló from Clark Adam ter up to Buda and then enjoying the walk down from the castle hill down the river again.

In the evening we went out to find a nice restaurant and that is not difficult in Budapest. We found one close to the hotel and on the walking street and we were lucky enough to find a table outside since the weather was nice and above 25 degrees. At the restaurant we took some national dishes and the waiters were really great and sweet. It had been a wonderful day in Budapest

I see you found your soulmate and want to learn Estonian! (I should also learn that language, it really sounds intruiging ;-)I totally know this feeling! Have you also visited other parts of Hungary? Kindest regards, Martijn.

Every time when I come to an airport, one of the big things is taking the first taxi to my hotel. For me this usually says a lot about the general situation of the place and what I have to expect.

In Budapest it was very efficient - no hazzle and perfect service. You tell your destination to a person at the Taxicounter - you receive a ticket with the destination and the price - this you then can hand over to your driver - what more do you need:-)

The taxi we got was very clean and new - our driver spoke ok english and in general the service was in top

This is a don't worry area

I DON'T recomend taking a taxi from airports/trainstations in Poland. Too expensive and too many problems (I mean: some taxi drivers try to cheat you to pay more than you should).
