Later on we had to sit through a boring video and learn all of the safety precautions about the Island i.e not to feed Dingo's. Once that was over, the 55 Backpackers were all put into groups of 11, this was good because it was a great way of getting to know one another. Me, Chris and Dee were all in the same Group which was also handy, also in the group we had 3 Israeli's, one being a chef, this was perfect, lol, 2 Swedish Girls and 3 German, a good mixture.
That night, most people went to bed fairly early but the 3 of us had bought drinks with us from Noosa, we got all this relatively cheap from a Drinks Warehouse there, we have a photo to prove how much we bought, lol. We decided to leave the lager we bought in the van and bring in the Spirits as this was easier to disguise. Later on being drunk, Dee got caught mixing his Jim Beam on the table, was very funny to watch. Luckily the bottle was almost empty so the Barman confiscated it and said he would be allowed it back in the Morning. Soon after that we all went to sleep.
The next Morning, we woke up bright and early not feeling the best, our own fault really. We helped check all our items into and on top of the 4x4 Jeep. After this, the Drivers from the group had to have a prep talk, another boring 30 mins but worth it i suppose.
Once all that was over, we got on our way. Chris drove first in our group as we headed towards the Barge which took us across to the Island. The Barge took roughly 15 minutes to cross and from there everything was pretty much sand. At first things in the 4x4 were very quiet but everyone started talking and telling stories about where they have been and are going to. We had a map and an itinery that we had to stick to throughout the trip just in case we got lost. Firstly we stopped off at Lake McKenzie, one of the most popular places on the Island and what i thought was the most beautiful place i had been to in Australia so far, amazing white sand and clear blue water, fresh water too. We stayed here for an hour or so, took a few group photos and had lunch, very awkward as we had to rashen and share between the 11 of us, im not used to this as you know me eating like a horse, lol.
By now we had to head on because we needed to set up camp before it got too dark, it was my turn to drive, 11 km doesn't sound much but when your in a 4x4 vehicle up and down sand tracks in second gear it feels like forever. I really enjoyed the whole experience of this type of driving, especially in the soft sand as the steering becomes very light and uphill you have to rev the balls off the engine otherwise you will become stuck.
Once we had set up camp the chef started to prepare dinner, we were all happy because none of us wanted to start dinner, i would have settled for curry noodles and tuna, lol. I got a surprise because i asked the chef 'what was for dinner'? He replied 'with the ingredients we had chicken curry but i brought extra'. In the end he made us chicken curry with coconut cream sauce and a lot of spices he had brought, to sum it up the nicest meal i have had so far in Australia.
The next Morning i was awoken by one of the German Guys making Tea and asking me 'why Me and Dee Where on the roof of the Van' and Chris spent the night sleeping inside the Jeep, lol. Luckily the tent wasn't broken. After French Toast for Breakfast we headed on to Indian Heads, this was the most Northern point of the Island we were alowd to drive because of Insurance purposes.
The last day of the trip we woke up really early and headed for Lake Wabbey, the lake was no comparism to Lake McKenzie but still nice to relax and have a swim. After this we had our lunch with the remains of food we had left and headed back to the Barge.
Once we got back to the Backpackers, we were all so glad to get our showers, there was sand everywhere as you could imagine. Later that night we had dinner and had a few drinks, i ended up going to bed early because i'd had enough of drinking.
From here we headed on towards Airlie Beach for our Whitsundays Trip.
Posted some pics for you all.
