And the long road back....

The view heading back...
The ride back to San Jose to catch my flight was overall quiet, but funny in it's own way.  My mind wandered quite a bit.  I'd like to share, but I worry I can't express it well enough for you to understand.  I'm going to try.  We who love to travel are a funny lot... and that makes couchsurfers a funny lot since that's what we are.  We take great joy not only in seeing each other, but if possible, seeing each other in groups as we did this weekend.  My mind flit back and forth... I thought about Mexico, what a great time I had there... how all it took to be welcomed at Ryan's and onto "The Veranda" was a happy frame of mind and a Roger Clyne CD.  I loved my time down there with him; and without couchsurfing it would have never happened.
Stark I know...
I thought about our other friends; Anu, and Casey, another founder of CS, and so many others, all headed this very day to Rotterdam for another little "Collective", to all get together, live together for a bit, and try to make the website better, until it was time to leave each other again, just as they have done twice before, just as they will again in the future.  I thought about all the other groups of travelers meeting up at that very moment, and ending those get togethers.... the way the houses felt after-wards as everyone filed out...  trying to find your shoes and purses (a challenge at the end of this very weekend) and the question that always came up, just as Amy had raised it; "What is the next trip"?  "When will we see each other next"?  And also the grand plans you have for the other people, the ones you haven't met yet that you want to, just like the word that Portia had taught me; the ones you were fated to meet, and would meet....  I thought of Christina here on Travbuddy that I love and have yet to make plans with yet, and Dougal who'd I'd love to have a pint with, Phil who I'm working towards meeting, and Lis and Andi who I already have plans with... and Ryan who I have NEW plans with... and wondered when I would next see John and Eric and Lisa and Portia again... and Cindy and Larry who I so want to hug... I thought of old endings, such as my first big trip to England and Scotland for a crazy New Years Eve Party, with 26 friends from 7 different countries, and which ones I was still in touch with and which ones I wasn't.... and all the while California flew past my window, and I knew that soon it would be gone and I'd be back in Arizona.

I'd been listening to a lot of Counting Crows on the trip, but never really had found this particular song before, called "Holiday in Spain"... it seemed to talk about ALL of this!  My time in Mexico, my first New Years trip, the strangeness of ending a time, and the desire to start a new one... all of it and more.  I  played it many times over in the car on the way home, and I'm sharing it with you here....

Counting Crows - Holiday in Spain

Got no place to go
but there's a girl waiting for me down in Mexico
She's got a bottle of tequila, a bottle of gin
And if I bring a little music I can fit right in...

We've got airplane rides
We got California drowning out the window side
We've got big black cars
And we've got stories how we slept with all the movie stars

Take a holiday in Spain
Leave my wings behind me
Dream my worries down the drain
And fly away to somewhere new

Hop on my choo-choo
I'll be your engine driver in a bunny suit
If you dress me up in pink and white
We may be just a little fuzzy 'bout it later tonight

She's my angel
She's a little better than the one that used to be with me
Cause she liked to scream at me
Man, it's a miracle that she's not living up in a tree

Take a holiday in Spain
Leave my wings behind me
Drive this little girl insane
And fly away to someone new

Everybody's gone...
They left the television screaming, left the radios on...
Someone stole my shoes  (?)
But there's a couple of bananas and a bottle of booze
Oh well - Happy New Year's baby
We could probably fix it if we clean it up all day...
OR - we could simply pack our bags -
and catch a plane to Barcelona - cause this city's a drag...

Take a holiday in Spain
Leave my wings behind me
Flush my worries down the drain
And fly away to somewhere new

Take a holiday in Spain
Leave my wings behind me
Drive this little girl insane
Fly away to someone new
Fly away to someone new
Fly away to someone new
