To the Yang family museum
Another 2.5 hour drive took us to Weifang, the kite capital of the world. We went to the Yang family compound which was both a factory and museum. This was not a large scale factory, but they had rooms with just a few workers each, each doing a different part of the kite production. We saw how the local kites were made . They were hand painted on silk, glued and attached to bamboo skeletons. There were kites of many many designs, butterflies, eagles, bees, dragons, to name just a few. They also had local artisans making woodcuts of gate guards, fat baby with fishes, stories from folklores, flowers, etc. These were used to print paper hangings for the Chinese spring festivals (lunar new year). The Chinese government is supposed to order them here as gifts at Chinese New Years for foreign diplomats.

We stayed at Fuwah hotel in Weifang, a very grand hotel, with a tall lobby going up all the floors. There were many kites decorating the walls. Nearby is a new amusement park with an artifical beach, very popular with the locals. It also had a castle from a fairytale, rides, etc. Some in our group found a Walmart during their nightly shopping and walking excursions. Their internet connection only cost 12RMB per hour!

The city had very wide streets like most big cities we saw in China. The street lights were decorated with butterfly kite designs.
