We did a lot of driving today. After leaving Zhengzhou and the Yellow River scenic area, we stopped at Kaifeng for lunch. At Kaifeng, the old provicial capital of Henan, we saw a "new" Bao Gong memorial temple. Bao Gong was a very famous Chinese person, figured in many folklores. He was supposed to be a very strict and good local governer, who in those days were also the judicial official. People were going to him to get their grievences resolved, and he was famous for being smart and fair and not corrupt like many of the other governers.
We only drove through the "emporer's street" in Kaifeng, that's a good thing, because I don't think there was much else to see in Kaifeng. The Yellow river had flooded the city several times in history, and burying the older cities underneath where newer ones were built.
The Yellow River is now about 10 meters higher than the city, so this is a city waiting to be flooded again.
Before leaving Kaifeng, we stopped at an embroidery factory to see how workers still hand embroider many paintings, the most famous here being the "scene along the river and Kaifeng", from a famous painting, it showed people going to town from the countryside, on boat, on horses or on foot, and the city gate, then the city street scene, very lively and full of details of life in those days. There were several copies of the painting to be seen in museums, one can be see in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, and I believe another one in Beijing.
This was our last stop in the province of Henan. Due to local tourist business policies, each province protects its own tourist industry, so we had to switch from the Henan tour bus we had for the last 3 days to one owned and operated by Shangdong province. So we said goodbyes to our Henan tour guide and driver, and switched to a Shangdong bus, along with new tour guide and driver.
