At the airport, these uniformed women were promoting the Maglev (magnetically levitated bullet train which goes to the airport from Pudong)

I am starting to think about what to pack and bring. It's been raining so much in California the past few weeks, I hope I won't get too wet in China! The flight leaves on April 9 from San Francisco to Shanghai. I will spend only one night in Shanghai, so won't get to see it much on this trip. Other than Shanghai and Beijing, I have not been to any of the cities in between, so it should be an interesting experience. The weather in these cities appear to be between high 40's to 70's, so that's pleasant. I am joining a tour and will be sharing a room with a stranger, at least to start with. I don't know how internet connected I will be, I will try to update this log enroute if I can.

Arrived in Shanghai after about 13 hours flight, it was raining when we landed.

The yummy super thin onion cakes, these are heated/fried in a skillet, not baked like a pizza, even though it may look like a pizza. Its ingredients are flour, green onions and a little salt, some oil or sesame oil. No cheese!
The tour operator met us at the airport, and we waited for the whole group to show up from several different flights (from San Francisco and Los Angeles), people were coming from all over the US, including as far as New Jersey, Michigan and Texas. A couple were even from Costa Rica. We went to the restaurant first to have dinner, since it was already about 8:30pm, and checked in the hotel about 10pm. One of the dishes for dinner is the familiar onion cake, however, the cakes were paper thin, which I have never had before, and it was very good. Internet cost 20RMB per hour here.

The Salvo Hotel is in a convenient location, but the stores were closed by the time we checked in, so we did not get to look around the streets. The hotel room was nice, with a big tub/shower section inside the bathroom, separated by glass sliding doors to the sink and toilet. A desk and sitting area with a TV, then 2 beds in the backroom. The goose comforter was nice and soft and I fell asleep within a few minutes.
