Located between Autun and Beaune in Sâone et Loire department(not to be confused with Sully-sur-Loire château),the Château de Sully is one of France's most romantic Renaissance château,a magnificent building arising out of the moated waters and one of the finest example of a French stately home.
Sully is the private home of the Duke of Magenta, head of the Mac Mahon family from noble Irish lineage, stretching back over a thousand of year.
The tittle of Duke de Magenta was given to Field Marshal Mac Mahon by Napoleon III(the small) who was later elected Président of the French Republic. As commoner,I was very glad to get my ticket from the pleasant Duke's sister! The young Duke and Marquis,Maurice Marie Patrick Bacchus Humphrey de Mac Mahon manages with his mother the family vineyard producing fine Burgundy wines, often awarded in Chassagne-Montrachet.
Before entering the château by a lovely 19th door, notice the curious stone shapes on the outside wall that represent a marquess's crown.Heading further, you enter the courtyard, said to be "the most beautiful courtyard in the Kingdom" built for a confident of Catherine de' Medici(1519-1589). From there you can observe the angled corner towers with pyramidal roofs and the different levels modified over time.
Then it is the visit of the living interior ( where no pic is allowed),warmed up by an age old central heating.
When you approach the château you see on the left stables and on the right the orangery, a remarkable walled kitchen garden, don't miss also the English park and the shop (fine Burgundian wines).
Also special children's events during schoolholidays,candelit tours,concerts,lunches,weddings.
On the 15th August is held the village fete with different activities on fishing,dogs...mostly hunting with hounds because Mac Mahons were very keen on hunting.
