Present Burgundy in orange, this region was the richest state in Europe in the 15th century

Burgundy ,an historic region of east central France, located between northern and southern Europe has always been a crossing of roads and civilisations.Rich in traditions, gastronomy, fine wines, rolling landscapes and sleepy villages,it is the OLD FRANCE with historic architecture seen in tens of Romanesque churches, castles(châteaux) and other historic buildings.

As Christianity spread through Europe, the power of the MONKS from the 10th century knew no bounds dominating Europe for centuries with the abbeys of Citeaux and above all  the ABBEY OF CLUNY,the mother house for over 1000 monasteries spread across Europe.

Their influence was not only spiritual and economical but also concerned artistic and intellectual subjects as well as social and political affairs.......They also introduced Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties to the region and divided the land into "parcelles"  according the soil,orientation,aspect....that originated the concept of TERROIR so important in Burgundy today and  generally for us French.

The monastic dominance laid the foundation for the glorious age of the DUKES OF BURGUNDY.There were 4 Dukes of Burgundy between 1364 and 1477,each marrying well increasing the power of the duchy.

The golden age began in 1364 when Philip the Bold,PHILIPPE LE HARDI, was given by his father, the King of France the tittle of Duke of Burgundy. He married the richest heiress in Europe,Margaret of Flanders, daugher of the Count of Flanders ruling Holland,Belgium and other territories.

He chose DIJON to set up court, that became a major city in Europe and Philip and Margaret's patronage of the arts was tremendous.

Philip the Bold-Philippe le Hardi, the first Duke of Burgundy. All the 4 Dukes married well!He married the richest heiress in Europe,Margaret of Flanders.

After Jean Sans-peur,Philippe le Bon,the last Duke was Charles the Bold,Charles Le Témeraire(1467-1477).The antagonism between the Kings of France and the Dukes of Burgundy reached a summit with the defeat and death of the last Duke Charles le Témeraire and in the middle of the 15th century,Burgundy, the richest and best administrated state in Europe was annexed by the King of France.
