With the good humour and amiability that comes with new friends at the beginning of a trip, we quickly agree to an impromptu rendezvous to New York city during our 5 hour layover at JFK. Congratulating our own spontaneity and ability to navigate the visitor-friendly New York train system, we wander around the Big Apple in a happy daze.
Satisfied, we board the flight to Amsterdam, equally excited to be 'visiting' a country neither of us has been before... even if it is only in the airport transit lounge... where we delight at the delicious gouda sandwiches and lament the lack of football-madness. Ah well, on to Nairobi, where we discover it's possible to buy beer in a souvenier shop and drink it while in line for security clearance... gotta love Kenya! The minute we're through security the football-fever finally begins, with a plane full of Nigerians heckling the Argentenian in preparation for the clash between those two countries the following day.
Arriving in Johannesburg around midnight but in high spirits, we're picked up by Sidlo and Isabelle - the couple who are hosting us - and are immediately introduced to African Time - with the '15 minute' ride home taking about an hour... 15 minutes then becoming the default answer to all 'how far away is that' questions for the remainder of the trip.
