And finally, the adventure begins

Holding the four boarding passes to the upcoming flights to New York, Amsterdam, Nairobi and finally Johannesburg
Oh the excitement of beginnings. Whether it be a trip, a new job, a new relationship... the beginnings are always full of breathless anticipation. Everything is possible, every new experience is special and wonderful. Long security lines are just a chance to exchange guesses at what adventures lie ahead... holding four boarding passes that represent 30+ hours of cramped airplanes, stale food and airport security lines is an auspicious moment to be gleefully captured on film.

With the good humour and amiability that comes with new friends at the beginning of a trip, we quickly agree to an impromptu rendezvous to New York city during our 5 hour layover at JFK. Congratulating our own spontaneity and ability to navigate the visitor-friendly New York train system, we wander around the Big Apple in a happy daze.

I can't get the "Empire State of Mind" song out of my head... possibly because I keep playing it on my iPod and singing it to my unimpressed travel buddy.

Satisfied, we board the flight to Amsterdam, equally excited to be 'visiting' a country neither of us has been before... even if it is only in the airport transit lounge... where we delight at the delicious gouda sandwiches and lament the lack of football-madness. Ah well, on to Nairobi, where we discover it's possible to buy beer in a souvenier shop and drink it while in line for security clearance... gotta love Kenya! The minute we're through security the football-fever finally begins, with a plane full of Nigerians heckling the Argentenian in preparation for the clash between those two countries the following day.

Arriving in Johannesburg around midnight but in high spirits, we're picked up by Sidlo and Isabelle - the couple who are hosting us - and are immediately introduced to African Time - with the '15 minute' ride home taking about an hour... 15 minutes then becoming the default answer to all 'how far away is that' questions for the remainder of the trip.
